All my artistic cousins, what is your drawing/painting setup at home?

After spending the weekend hunched over mini ACEO-sized paintings, I have realized three things:

1. My posture sucks.
2. I need good lighting.
3. I really need an adjustable easel.

I don't even know where to start with lighting - too many options & I'm too tired to do research atm. I actually do have a drafting table, but considering it's also my only table at the moment it's full of stuff and cannot be angled. I am looking at an adjustable table top easels like this one [link], or maybe this one [link]. What do you all think? How do you deal with the neck & shoulder pain? :/

P.S.: over the weekend I read Josh Waitzkin's "The Art of Learning: A Journey in the Pursuit of Excellence". HIGHLY recommend it to anyone interested in improving themselves and bringing their game to the top level. So inspiring. :wow:

Let's see ....

I draw/paint while sitting on my living room sofa. I don't paint on an easel. I have varous sizes of masonite that I use as a portable surface I guess you'd call it. Usually placed on a huge couch pillow that's on my lap. Paints, brushes, and snacks to either side of me ... along with often one or even both of my cats. While I paint I have the TV on or a DVD playing in the background.

As for lighting it's just regular lighting that's a bit dim. I paint using a fairly dark pallette yet by painting in low lighting I end up getting pretty vibrant colours that look soothing in my houses lighting but when exposed to brighter light really pop, since I'm accomedating for the lack of light in the first place.

Sounds pretty comfy. :) But do you find your neck & shoulders aching after too much painting? Or any eye strain?

Maybe I'm just too brittle in my old age. LOL

Yeah of course things tighten up after a while ... especially if I'm working in graphite. Mostly my hand and sometimes my shoulder. but it's not too bad as long as I get up every now and then to walk around, take a leak, or get a drink or snack ...

By the time my eyes are tired the rest of me is too and I call it a night.

I guess that's the really important part - taking breaks even if you don't want to. :D I get so caught up in the process I loose track of time … but, that's nothing a little timer can't fix. ^_^

Thanks so much for your input!

haha pictures you with a timer.

If you drink a very large glass of water or other beverage ... you'll have an internal timer going off after a while don't worry.

I get into my art like that as well ... I've sat painting or drawing from like 6pm until 5am with only breaks to grab a bite or get a drink or when my bladder was about to burst. haha

Good luck with it all. :)

I could really use one of those drawing desks too :( I lean over too much.

I think no matter what your set up is, the only way to help the crampies is to get up and take frequent short breaks.
Lighting? That is tough. I just have an incandescent desk lamp that is taped atop my draft board. It took some jimmy-rigging, but hey, it works for now.
Posture? I swear someday they will call me the hunchback of Notre Dame. I have yet to figure out how to maintain "good" posture while creating...it just doesn't seem possible to me.
Best of luck finding a comfortable set up!!

I think I gotta cultivate an awareness of my posture, not just when drawing but at the day job, too. And yeah, frequent breaks are a must!

Do what I did. Collect pictures of everyone's art room posted here at dA, and apply anything you may find interesting.

Mmh - I didn't upload mine yet...

I don't think everyone has pictures of their room, though. Or maybe just not the artists I know. ^_^
